Western Cape hosts Taking Parliament to the People

Eden District Municipality is hosting the “Taking Parliament to the People” programme, which has been running since 2002. This programme offers an opportunity for members of the public to interact directly with Members of Parliament and National Council of Provinces.

The week-long programme includes site visits to government institutions and projects and public hearings on basic and higher education, local government, human settlements, water and sanitation, health, social development and home affairs issues, agriculture, labour and land reform, economic development and youth, police and the justice system and on energy.

On Monday, 13 April, people of Eden District Municipality came in numbers to attend the first day of the week-long (13 - 17 April 2015) Taking Parliament to the People programme at the Bridgton Sports Grounds in Oudtshoorn.

Deputy Chairperson of the National Council of the Provinces (NCOP), Mr Raseriti Tau, addressing about 3 000 people of the Eden District said: “we are gathered here in Oudtshoorn, during a very important historical time of our developmental state. We have just surpassed the 20th year of our democratic Parliament, which is a milestone in our historic journey, to build a truly democratic and socially unified nation.

The programme concludes on Friday, 17 April, with Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa addressing a plenary sitting of the National Council of Provinces at the Bridgton Sports Grounds in Oudtshoorn.
