Preparations Underway for Upcoming State of the Nation Address

As the first month of the year draws to a close, serious preparations are currently underway for the State of the Nation Address taking place in February 2014.

Due to take place under the theme “20 Years of a Democratic Parliament”, the State of the Nation Address will see delegates gathered together in a Joint Sitting of the National Assembly and the National Council of Provinces.

In celebration of 20 years of democracy, each province will elect children born on 27 April 1994 to feature as special visitors during the State of the Nation Address. One winner will then be selected from each province to will be flown to Cape Town and be seated in the public gallery chamber during proceedings. The occasion will also see volunteer organisations such as the National Sea Rescue Institute and the South African Girl scouts feature among the Civil and Junior guards, respectively.

Members of the media have been invited to a briefing on the 2014 State of the Nation Address by Parliament’s Presiding Officers that will take place on 11 February from 10:00 to 11:00 at Parliament’s National Assembly Building.

The Speaker of the National Assembly, Mr Max Sisulu, and the Chairperson of the National Council of Provinces, Mr Mninwa Mahlangu, together with their deputies, will provide details about Parliament’s hosting of the 2014 State of the Nation Address at the briefing.

Members of the media will also have an opportunity to attend a demonstration of the upgraded audio and information technology facilities in the National Assembly following the briefing.

The 2014 State of the Nation Address will take place on Thursday, 13 February at 19:00.
